Everyone loves to get recognized for success. What do you do when you don’t get recognized in the way you think you deserve? In 1 Samuel 16, we see King Saul go through this very situation. King Saul and David returned from battle with the women dancing and singing in celebration. They said that King Saul killed thousands and David tens of thousands. They didn’t do anything other than mention the different numbers for King Saul and David, but King Saul took that as they were going to try to make David king. This caused him to be jealous and suspicious of David, when David hadn’t done anything wrong. It changed their relationship forever.
It can often be the same with us. Someone gets recognized more than we do and instantly we put up a wall. The other person hasn’t done anything wrong, but we act as if they wronged us. It taints our relationships and causes us to lose focus on our real purpose…serving God. We turn our focus to how we can gain recognition from people and not use our talents to serve God. This causes us to struggle and feel like we are merely surviving until the next recognition opportunity. Taking our focus off of ourselves and back on God’s purpose will help us thrive and get recognition and blessings from God.
